Colorado Firearms Transfer & Magazine Laws

All Transfers Require an FFL
In Colorado, all firearms transfers—including private sales between individuals—must occur through a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL). The FFL will conduct the required universal background check. The buyer must pass the background check and pay the associated transfer fees before taking possession of the firearm.

Mandatory Waiting Period Colorado law mandates a statutory three-day waiting period for all firearms purchases and transfers. The three-day waiting period begins the moment the background check is initiated by the FFL.

Magazine Capacity Restrictions Colorado prohibits the sale, transfer, and possession of large-capacity ammunition magazines. Magazines are legally restricted to a maximum capacity of 15 rounds. Do not list magazines exceeding 15 rounds for sale or trade on this forum.
